During these turbulent times, it is important to focus on the positive. If you are lucky enough to be able to work from home, there are many things that you can do to stay focused and literally get the “job” done.

TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME.jpg

1. Take it one day at a time:

The transition to working from home will take time. Don’t worry if you don’t have it all figured out. It will take time to learn how to navigate this new world.

2. Dress the part:

Start the day off right. Just because you are working at home does not mean you need to stay in your pajamas all day, although it may be tempting. Don’t neglect your personal hygiene. Get up and start the day as if you were going into the office. This will help you mentally prepare for the day ahead.

FIND YOUR SANCTUARY.jpg

3. Find your sanctuary:

Find or create a space that you can call your own. This may be easier said than done, given the ever-changing nature of this current crisis. If a home office is not an option, try to find any quiet space you can. If not, use headphones to block out distractions so that you can stay focused on the task at hand.

4. Know thyself:

If you know that you are most productive during certain times of the day, then block out those times on your schedule. If you like to listen to music or have the news playing in the background, then do so. Do whatever it takes to create an environment that will bring out your most productive self.

MAKE A LIST.jpg

5. Make a list:

Create a list of tasks and stick to it. Starting each morning by making a list of tasks will help you focus and plan your day. Tackle one task at a time, this will give you a sense of accomplishment that you can build on, one task at a time.

LIMIT DISTRACTION.jpg

6. Limit distractions:

Things are changing rapidly and you may want to stay abreast of all of the latest developments. But try not to spend the entire day with one eye on the news scroll. Change the preferences on your devices to limit notifications and updates so you aren’t constantly distracted by the latest developments. Check-in with your favorite news outlet during scheduled breaks only to help you stay engaged.

7. Take regular breaks:

There are times when we get so wrapped up in a specific task that we forget about the most important thing, ourselves. Take the time to schedule frequent breaks throughout the day to help you recharge. Going outside for a walk may not be an option, but you can explore some cool new “free” virtual activities to help you find a few moments of peace throughout your day.

8. Diet:

Make sure to eat healthy and stay hydrated. Stay away from junk food if you can. Treating your body like a temple will help you stay in shape as well as lift your spirits. Spice up your lunchtime routine by trying something new. You worked hard today (and everyday), you are worth it.

STAY CONNECTED.jpg

9. Stay connected:

It is easy to begin to feel disconnected with co-workers as well as family and friends. Consider scheduling a daily/weekly video conference with your team. It is a great way to create a sense of community and foster collaboration. Remember you are not alone, we are all in this together.

CLEAR COMMUNICATION.jpg

10. Clear communication:

Read it again, before you hit “send”. We are all going to have to change the way we interact with our peers in this new remote work environment. A poorly worded email may lead to misinterpretation and unnecessary confusion. Make sure that your intentions, tone and objectives are clear before you hit send. When in doubt, pick up the phone or video conference to make sure that you communicate clearly.
